058 What the Grass Once Meant
Lyrics
i used to fall into the grass
sky so wide it had no end
blades would comb across my palms
cool earth breathing through my shirt
insects made a lazy hum
round my sunwarmed tenyearold head
i lay there like i matched the field
like nothing small could find my skin
back then the world was soft and wide
i never feared what lived inside
now i stand on the wooden deck
watching the wind move through the green
what i know has come between
my hands and what the grass once meant
then came the mat storebought and square
foam and rubber cut to fit
a careful layer for my skin
between me and the grass i trusted
now every stem can hide a bite
every shade can hold a sting
the lawn is trimmed the edges clean
still i don't step off the deck
they taught me names for every harm
and took the field out of my arms
now i stand on the wooden deck
watching the wind move through the green
what i know has come between
my hands and everything it meant
the blades still bend the way they did
my kingdom swaying in the dusk
not lost by force but piece by piece
to all the things i came to know
